Balance Busyness with Rest

Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.
Mark 6:31 NIV
Mark 6 talks about how busy Jesus and the disciples were, so busy that they forgot to eat. Even Jesus had busy days, so I can’t say I’m giving up busyness, can I?
40 Things to Give Up for a Better Life
#2 Busyness without times of rest
It’s ironic that Mark 6:31 stood out to me this morning as I read my Bible. Why, you ask? Because here it is, 7:00 pm, and I’m finally sitting down to write my post. I feel antsy after a day of work, a two hour drive, and an unneeded second cup of coffee.
It’s on busy days like today that I need to listen to Jesus words and “come away with him to a quiet place and get some rest..” Sometimes that rest means going to bed early and reading the Bible or a good devotional/inspirational book.
I’m not upset at all about the busyness of the day because the drive took me to a coffee shop where I spent a couple hours catching up with two of my oldest friends, a life-giving monthly getaway. In the middle of a busy life, the three of us are trying hard to prioritize our relationships. I’m thankful for friendships created in elementary school and still going strong.
I will continue to have busy days if it means time with friends are included in that busyness.
But I will also try to balance the busyness with rest and time alone with God.
Will you?
