Make Your Momma Proud

“My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck. When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life,”
Proverbs 6:20-23 NIV
Today Jessica came home, a month early from her junior year of college. I’m glad she’s home, but sad that because of this pandemic her year ended too soon.
I helped her unpack her car. Looking into a box I saw floss and smiled.
“You make your momma proud.” I winked at her.
Like her grandma and mom , she’s an over-flosser. It nice to know some lessons stuck.
Proverbs remind us to bind our mother’s teachings on our heart. If we do, they will guide us.
Since my mom’s death, I find moments when her sayings come back to me. I see ways her life taught me how to live a Christ-centered, prayerful life.
- I hear, “In my heart there rings a melody, there rings a melody, there rings a melody of love.”.
- I hear, “Many hands make light work.”
- I hear, “Have you prayed about that?”
I’m thankful I was raised by her. I hope I have sufficiently bound her teachings to my heart.
Lord,
May your teachings, your commands, your instructions
Be in my heart as a guide and a light
As I walk through my life.
May they watch over me at night
And speak to me in the day.
Help Me listen and obey.
Amen.
