“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”
Ephesians 4:2 NIV
4 Characteristics of Love
- Bearing with each other
This weekend my two younger daughters and I flew to South Dakota to visit my oldest daughter, Jaena. We’ve done girls trips for several years. But this year, the only way to make it happen was to fly out to see Jaena whee she lives.
When the girls were teens lots of arguments would periodically break out during these trips. Sometimes I wondered why we were taking the trip.
- Do these girls even like each other?
- Do they want to be together?
- Will they ever learn to get along?
Thankfully this trip was different. They are all adults now. Two live on their own, one is in college. And for the first time, I saw the maturity of adults.
They were able to bear together with each other in love.
Sure, they got on each other’s news. Sure, the child elbows triggers were still present. Sure they got tired and hungry and grumpy.
But they also, gave each other space, asked for forgiveness or clarification before getting angry, and extended grace to each other.
It was a beautiful picture of what love should look like.
Teach us to love with patience, gentleness, and humility.
Teach out how to see each other through your eyes.
Teach us how to bear with each other’s imperfections.
And teach us how to recognize our own flaws and ask forgiveness of those we hurt.Amen.
