Seeing God’s Handwriting in the Rain
I am supposed to be frustrated or downright angry about all the rain we are getting this month. My husband is a farmer, and he can’t plant anything. The ground is too wet. It’s getting late, almost too late to plant the 1000 acres of corn he needs to have in the ground. And yet every day it rains and keeps him from putting the seeds in earth. It’s muddy, and grey, and frustrating and makes all the farmers around here nxious.
But God is teaching me something this month through my daily devotions. I’ve been concentrating on Psalm 19. Verses 1-6 say,
1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
Psalm 19:1-6 (NIV)
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
3 They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
4 Yet their voice[b] goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
5 It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
6 It rises at one end of the heavens
and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is deprived of its warmth
And so I’ve been reminded to see the beauty of God’s creation in the dark skies, the lightening, under, and driving rain. It all sings his glory without words. I have been thanking God for the rain that we don’t need, the cloudy skies that threaten to dampen my mood and the forced inactivity in my garden and husband’s fields.
God is good. All the time! Even when we don’t get the weather we want… or need.
There shall be showers of blessing:
This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.Refrain:
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy-drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.There shall be showers of blessing,
Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and the valleys,
Sound of abundance of rain.There shall be showers of blessing;
Send them upon us, O Lord;
Grant to us now a refreshing,
Come, and now honor Thy Word.There shall be showers of blessing:
Oh, that today they might fall,
Now as to God we’re confessing,
Now as on Jesus we call!There shall be showers of blessing,

If we but trust and obey;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
If we let God have His way.
